How to illuminate a bathroom mirror

How to illuminate a bathroom mirror

The correct lighting of the bathroom mirror allows you to get the most out of it in terms of both decoration and visual comfort. The mirror is one of the most important elements to take into consideration when choosing lighting solutions in the bathroom, so its light must be designed first of all to be functional.

We are talking about direct, intense, uniform light, with optimised positioning of the luminaires. Obviously, the entire bathroom must follow precise lighting rules to provide light and convey an idea of cleanliness, freshness and comfort.

Bathroom mirror: illuminance, LED lights, colour temperature

The ideal lighting for a mirror should provide uniform illuminance with a CRI (Colour Rendering Index) higher than 80. The preferred light source is certainly an LED light with a colour temperature range between 3000K and 4000K, i.e. a warm or natural light. It is advisable to adjust the lighting according to the width or height of the mirror. As there is a high level of humidity in the bathroom, we recommend an appropriate protection rating, such as the one provided by the PIX luminaire: Recessed LED Downlight IP54, or by the LED ceiling light LUNA, a luminaire with IP44 and CRI>90.

Lights for the bathroom mirror

There are many solutions for lighting the bathroom mirror, including:

  • Side wall lights
The classic lighting solution consists of two side lights, with light grazing the mirror at eye level. The side double light source allows to have light on two sides of the mirror, thus minimising shadows. Novalux wall lights are available in many versions and models such as PROFILO T, VELA, APP.

  • Wall lights above the mirror
The wall lights can also be placed above the mirror: we advise you to choose one or more light sources that cover the entire width of the mirror, so as not to create light cones that can make the lighting uneven and create areas of shadow. The ideal solution is a line of LEDs of suitable length for the size of the mirror, such as Novalux P-30 wall LED strip.

  • Adjustable spotlights
Adjustable spotlights are ideal for directing the light beam where it is needed, making the light comfortable and functional and providing perfect output in every situation. The spotlights, such as OWL, besides providing uniform, diffuse lighting, are real furnishing elements.

  • Recessed adjustable spotlights
In case of light coves or false ceilings above the mirror, recessed spotlights can be used. Round recessed adjustable LED spotlights such as BLINK, PINA or square ones such as MAU.

  • Backlit mirror with LED strip
Another solution is the backlit mirror: mirrors with integrated lighting thanks to LED strips applied and positioned behind the mirror for diffuse, unobtrusive, sharp, never glaring light.  For example, the lines of light created by PROFILED, placed behind the mirror with grazing light.

  • Multiple lighting solutions
For maximum visual comfort, several types of light can be combined for the bathroom mirror. For example, recessed LEDs with white, direct light on the face, together with pendant lamps with diffuse, uniform light.
